Variants (if any) and number of speakers The endangered language community that I represent is called Suba. It is located in Suba Sub-county in Homabay county, Kenya. There are three dialects which are being spoken by the Suba community. These are: Ekisuva of Kaksingri and Gwasii; Olusuva of Mfwangano and Rusinga; and Ekisuba of Muhuru communities. All these dialects are in the verge of extinction. Currently less than 2000 are speakers of the three dialects. These are adult speakers of age 55years and above. The younger generations have completely lost the language and have been influenced by Luo language which is being used by them as their first language. The younger generations use Luo language for communication in the villages. They also use it in pre-schools and primary schools as a means of communication apart from Kiswahili and English
How is the community organisedIn an effort to revive the Suba dialects, we have formed a Non-Governmental and non-profit making Organization called Africa Foundation for Endangered Languages and Cultural Heitages (AFELCH) with its headquarter situated in a small town called Sindo found in Suba Sub-county, Kenya. The main purpose of the Organization is to restore, maintain, and promote use of the Kenyan endangered languages and cultural heritages for the present and future generations. We are seeking for partners to help realize this goal. We are also seeking for donor funders to help us implement our activities. I am one of the founders and current Chairman of this Organization. We network with the Kenya National Government and the County Governments in Kenya to promote revitalization of the endangered languages in the country.
