Variants (if any) and number of speakers | The language is spoken by the Kannaura tribe of Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh in North India. It has a population of about 84000 as per Census of India records of 2011. This population is divided into about eight different language groups, Kinnauri being the major language of them. Other language varieties of the tribe with their speakers are - chitkuli (1200), sumcho (2000), jangrami (1500), choyuli (700), bhoti kinnauri (4500), sunam (300) (all Tibeto Burman languages) and an Indo Aryan language called pahari kinnauri (12000). |
How is the community organised | It is a scheduled tribe community as per the Constitution of India. They avail social and economic benefits in education, jobs and other social schemes in order to improve their socio-economic status in society which is otherwise considered primitive and backward. |
